Pass the Picasso: Iconic Picasso plate goes under the hammer at McTear's, Glasgow Over the course of his long career, Picasso began to design ceramic editions between 1947 and 1971, resulting in 633 different editions. In the early stages of this design process, he produced practical objects such as plates and bowls, but later turned to vases and pitchers. Additionally, Picasso used a number of different ceramic techniques and honed this to two methods: the replication of an original object by hand, and the creation of original images in dry clay moulds. Picasso's ceramics in the latter category bear the mark 'Empreinte originale de Picasso.'

Ceramics made by Picasso also feature markings to the underside (and sometimes inside the object). Editions reference the edition number, and the earlier work is more sought after than a later edition number (i.e. 1/300 rather than 280/300). The most common stamp on Picasso's ceramics include 'Madoura plein feu', 'Empreinte originale de Picasso' and 'Edition Picasso'.

Estimated at £1000-1500, this ceramic plate by the renowned artist Pablo Picasso went under the hammer during our British & Continental Ceramics & Glass Auction which took place on Thursday 26th January. After competition on the phone and online, the ceramic plate achieved £3400 hammer, selling to an online buyer in France.

This plate, titled 'Visage No. 189 ('Face')' was numbered 47 of an edition of 150. Picasso made ceramic editions between 1947 - 1971, and as this plate is early in its edition, it is an excellent investment for any discerning collector of art pottery and ceramics.
